Get Involved

We wouldn’t be able to help the thousands of individuals that we have without the help and support of our many wonderful volunteers and donors. Here you can learn about how people across the world are helping the culture bearers of New Orleans.

Race for the Rainforest

Thank you so much to Steve Morrow and everyone at Race for the Rainforest! They have selected SHNO as the official beneficiary of their final 50 mile Race for the Rainforest.  We look forward to seeing everybody run on Earth Day, April 22, 2012.  If you would like to sign up for the race, head on over to RaceForTheRainforest.com

Help From Switzerland

We can’t thank Robyn Tanner and her friend Barbara Keller-Inhelder enough for their hard work and generosity!  Here is Robyn’s story in her own words:

“I’m a New Orleans native who has lived in Switzerland with my husband and children for the last 13 years. After Katrina, my good friend Barbara Keller-Inhelder, wanted to help me help New Orleans. We had the idea to cook jambalaya at the local jazz festival in Rapperswil, Switzerland called Blues’n'Jazz Rapperswil.

New Orleans musicians play in Rapperswil every year along with other big names in the

business. Friends and family donated their time to cook and I had to multiply my jambalaya recipe times 100 to feed everyone. It’s not easy when you can’t find Andouille sausage or Rotel tomatoes. We cooked two years in a row and raised quite a bit of money and even fed some Nawlin’s musicians! The Pinstripe Band was a blast! They needed a home-cooked meal and little bit of Tony’s and Tobasco.

Although nothing can beat the Fest and crawfish bread, it’s been fun sharing my culture with the wonderful people in Switzerland! I love raising my boys here but worry that they may not be able to peel a crawfish or stomp doubloons. They love being in New Orleans when we’re there and I love showing them.

We’ve looked since the last festival for the right organization to donate the money to. Sweet Home New Orleans and The Horn Doctor are exactly what we had in mind. It was important to both of us that it would help the people that were responsible for making New Orleans the place that so many people love around the world – the musicians and their families. We have $5,000 to donate to SHNO and $5,000 we would like to see help fund The Horn Doctor’s visit.

I’ve taken a break from cooking but feel inspired by SHNO to do more to help your efforts and the people that make the city the place I feel homesick for from January to June. Maybe we can raise money to bring some young talent to the stage in Europe. It would be great to see the musicians with their horns in Rapperswil!”
